SBIRT was developed partly because of physician lack of identification of substance use disorders. I actually gave my doctor SBIRT information packets to disseminate at her practice. Substance abuse in the elderly -- particularly alcohol, opioids and benzodiazepines -- is an epidemic. Primary care is the front line in identifying older substance abusers (65+). SBIRT is an effective tool for them to use in their practices. Also, SAMHSA recommends all adults over 60 receive annual screening for substance use disorders.
